History

The college was established in 1948 following Mary Behrend's donation of her 400-acre Glenhill Farm estate to Penn State in order to establish the Penn State Behrend center. In 1971, Behrend was elevated to a Penn State College, and was enabled to grant Bachelor's degrees, becoming the first Penn State campus outside of University Park to do so.

Facilities

Fifty-two buildings on 725 acres. New facilities include indoor athletics and recreation center, three residence halls, observatory, chapel and carillon, and Knowledge Park at Penn State Erie. A 160,000-square-foot Research and Economic Development Center (REDC) opened in Fall 2006. The REDC houses both the Sam and Irene Black School of Business and the School of Engineering. Penn State Behrend is one of the first higher education institutions to locate both an accredited business school and an engineering school with all of its programs accredited under one roof. More information about the REDC can be found at the REDC Web site.
