Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.  The Director serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School and reports to the College’s Chancellor’s Office.  The School has 68 full-time faculty members and offers six Bachelor of Arts degree programs (Communication, English, General Arts and Sciences, History, Political Science, and Psychology), a Bachelor of Science degree program (Psychology), and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program (Creative Writing).  The School also offers courses in anthropology, art, art history, foreign languages, music, philosophy, religious studies, sociology, and theater.

Candidates should have a teaching and research record with credentials commensurate for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in one of the School’s academic disciplines.  The ideal candidate will have at least three years of administrative experience, including a record of progressively increasing responsibilities; enjoy working with students, administrators, and faculty members from a broad range of disciplines; will have experience in innovative program development; will have strong skills in written, oral, and interpersonal communication; will be committed to shared governance; will be strongly supportive of diversity; and will have experience in fund-raising and outreach efforts.

Essential duties of the Director include the following:

  • Oversee the academic, scholarly, service, and outreach mission of the School.
  • Supervise curricular development, implementation, and assessment in collaboration with the faculty.
  • Provide a strategic vision for the School and implement strategic-planning initiatives.
  • Recruit and support a faculty committed to undergraduate teaching and a productive program of research.
  • Evaluate faculty members for promotion and tenure; evaluate faculty and staff members for annual review.
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of students.
  • Enhance the visibility of the School and its mission of offering a rigorous liberal education.
  • Work with the Office of Development and University Relations to secure gifts and endowments for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Manage the School’s budgets and endowment funds.
  • Provide visible and active leadership for the College’s commitment to diversity.

Students and faculty enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the College’s 725-acre campus in the suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city.  The College is comprised of four academic schools (Humanities and Social Sciences; Science; Black School of Business; and Engineering) employing 240 full-time and 57 part-time faculty members. The institution’s 4,600 students can choose from 34 baccalaureate majors and 22 minors, six associate degree programs, and two master’s programs.  The Penn State Behrend campus includes Knowledge Park, a 200-acre research and development park that builds on the College’s strengths in applied research and technology transfer.

There are more than 50 buildings on campus, including residential housing for 1,650 students, an athletics and recreation center, chapel, observatory, and child care facility.  More than 110 student clubs/organizations as well as award-winning speaker and chamber music series enrich campus life.  A strong NCAA Division III athletics program features 21 varsity teams that compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Lecturer in German

One-year, part-time appointment to teach undergraduate language courses in German. Ph.D. preferred; M.A. required; teaching experience desirable. Responsibilities include two classes in the fall of 2010 (German 001 & 003) and one class in the spring of 2011 (German 002).
