Penn State Behrend has become one of the best colleges in the nation with the generous help of its many donors and friends who give money, time, expertise, and equipment. Philanthropy started at Behrend on June 28, 1948 when Mary Behrend donated her Glenhill estate to the University.
Today the college’s philanthropists include alumni, friends, corporations, foundations, and other organizations. We value every one of their gifts, from cash donations that young alumni contribute to larger gifts that create endowments by more established alumni and friends.
Endowments are of special importance to Penn State Behrend. An endowment is a gift that provides dependable support for a specific college need. The University invests the initial gift and allocates a portion of the average annual return to the college for needs outlined by the donor. The remainder is added to the principal as protection against inflation. Endowments can be set up to support purposes identified by the donor, which may include scholarships for academically talented students, professorships for established or young faculty, research laboratories, athletics, undergraduate research, student leadership, and more.
Endowments blend our donors’ visions with the college’s goals and contribute substantially to the quality of student learning, faculty research, and campus life. This lasting revenue seeds new initiatives and helps reduce reliance on external funding sources, while also providing students with much needed financial assistance for tuition costs.
Like Mary Behrend’s forward-looking gift nearly 60 years ago, philanthropy today is essential to strengthening the quality educational programs and college life that produces world-class Penn State graduates.
