Penn State Behrend Lions Sweep
Medaille College in Home Opener
After
taking a one run loss to Fredonia State a day ago the Behrend Lions would
get back on track and improve to 11-2 on the year after a two game sweep of
Medaille College in AMCC play. The blue and white won game one 13-2
and game two 4-1.
Starting pitcher Charles Zimoski (Oil City, PA/Oil City) would start the day
off fanning the first two batters and getting the third to ground out to the
second baseman. The blue and white would then jump on the Mavericks in the
bottom of the first inning scoring three runs on four hits. That would be
all that the Behrend Lions would need, as Zimoski would pitch a complete
game four hitter allowing only two earned runs. Zimoski would also strike
out 10 and walk none to improve to 3-0 on the year.
The Behrend bats were alive, as they would score 13 runs on 18 hits. Dave
Miller (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) and Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh, PA/North
Allegheny) both contributed 3 hits apiece. Lang would drive in six runners,
as Miller would bring in five, three of which on a homerun to left center.
Adding to the hit total was Ed Kessler (Pittsburgh, PA/Bethel Park) and Adam
Hartwig (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) who both went 3-for-4.
The Behrend Lions bats went silent throughout game two. The blue and white
would get on the board first as Harry Latta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBouf)
would reach on an error and advance to third after an hit-by-pitch and a
double play. With two outs and a man on third junior Dustin Dubensky
(Punxsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) would single to drive in Latta. Medaille
(2-8, 0-4)
would answer in the top of the fourth when Mike Kogut would single to start
the inning and then be driven in by Jeffrey Cox.
The blue and white would answer in the bottom of the fourth, as they would
plate one runner on two hits to bring the score to 2-1. Zach Sheffer
(Cranberry, PA/Cranberry), who entered the game in the top of the fourth,
would shut the door in the fifth sitting down the Mavericks one, two, three.
He would do the same in the sixth striking out two and getting a ground ball
to the shortstop.
The blue and white would get two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go
up 4-1. Behrend senior closer Ryan Smith (Franklin, PA/Franklin) would come
in to close the game in the top of the seventh. Smith would get ahead of the
Medaille hitters and pitch a clean inning for the save.
The Behrend Lions are now 4-0 in the conference. They will take on Mt.
Aloysius in an AMCC match-up on March 28 at 1:00 p.m. on the Behrend
diamond. The blue and white will then travel to Pitt-Bradford on March
31.
