Penn State Behrend Lions Sweep
Pitt-Greensburg in AMCC Action
The
blue and white would sweep the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats winning 2-0 and 7-1
in an AMCC double header on the Behrend diamond.
The Behrend Lions captured game one behind
the pitching of David Koerbel (Pittsburgh, PA/Central Catholic). Koerbel
would pitch a complete game two hitter in route to his sixth win of the
season. The shutout was Koerbel’s 24th win of his career making him the all
time wins leader at Penn State Behrend.
Pitt-Greensburg would threaten in the top of the first as Matt Gouveia would
be stranded at third. The Behrend Lions would also threaten in the bottom of
the first as Jon Gray (State College, PA/State College) would reach on an
hit-by-pitch to lead off the game. Ed Kessler (Pittsburgh, PA/Bethel Park)
would then walk to start the inning with men on first and second with no
outs. Josh Fyffe (Fredonia, PA/Sharpsville) would sacrifice them over to
make it second and third with one out. However, Pitt-Greensburg’s Branden
Munshower would work out of the jam.
The blue and white would get on the board in the bottom of the third as
Kessler would reach on a wind and sun aided single. Kessler would steal
second before Fyffe would double in Kessler with a hard hit ball past the
third baseman.
Koerbel would settle in after the first inning giving up only two hits while
striking out six in his third complete game of the year.
Geoff Lang (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) would lead off the bottom of the
fourth with a single up the middle. Lang would move to second on a Dustin
Dubensky (Punxsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) ground out. Ryan Geibel (East
Butler, PA/Butler) would ground out to the right side to drive in Lang. Two
runs would be all the blue and white would need to improve to 11-2 in league
play. Fyffe would go 2-for-2 while driving in one run for the Behrend
Lions.
Andrew Chrobak (New Castle, PA/Laurel) pitched another gem in game two. As
the Behrend Lions would win 7-1. The blue and white would get the
first run of the game on a Fyffe single that would drive in Geibel to put
the Behrend Lions up 1-0. Pitt-Greensburg would come back in the top of the
fourth with a run of their own on two hits.
Behrend would open up the game scoring three runs in both the bottom of the
fourth and fifth innings. Both Adam Hartwig (Pittsburgh, PA/North
Allegheny) and Lang would go 2-for-3 in game two. Lang would drive in
two runs for the Behrend Lions.
The Behrend Lions are now
12-2 in the conference and 19-4 overall. The blue and white will play five
of their next eight games on the road. Behrend will play at Allegheny
on April 14. They will be back on the Behrend diamond on April 22 at
1:00 p.m.
