2001 Penn State Behrend Baseball Results The 2001 baseball season began with 33 consecutive road games while the construction of the new $1 million dollar baseball/softball complex was being completed on campus. The year concluded with the blue and white enjoying a four-game winning streak, finishing the year with an 18-20 record. The 18 victories are the fifth most in school history, and over the past four seasons the Behrend Lions are 89-63. This year's team earned its third-straight berth to the AMCC Tournament. However, the Behrend Lions but could not hang on to a 4-3 ninth inning lead to number-one seeded Pitt-Bradford and lost 5-4. In an elimination game, Behrend opened an 8-3 lead through seven innings against Penn State Altoona, but lost 10-8, earning a fourth-place finish in the league tournament. "At times we played as well as anybody," said head coach Paul Benim. "But overall, we struggled defensively and it cost us." The Behrend Lions played 33 of 38 games on the road because of the construction on their new baseball field that will be ready for use in the spring of 2002. The team wrapped up the season on Saturday, April 28, with at doubleheader at Jerry Uht Park, home of the Erie SeaWolves, the AA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. They defeated Fredonia 11-3 and 13-6 in front of alumni and friends. Then on Sunday, they won a pair on the road at Oberlin, 12-8 and 14-1. Named to the all-conference squad this year were Jake Boyle (Cambridge Springs/Maplewood) and Keith Lepionka (DuBois/Dubois). Boyle was named co-MVP of the league after batting .400 with 8 home runs and 43 RBIs, while Lepionka hit .330 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. Pitcher Ryan Seyler (Franklin/Franklin), third baseman Jason Karas (Bridgeville/Chartiers Valley), and second baseman Matt Slavonic (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) were tabbed for honorable mention.
