Softball Concludes Regular Season with Sweep of Frostburg State

Behrend softball picked up a pair of key victories over Frostburg State to conclude the regular season on Saturday, April 28.   With the wins, Behrend locks up a number three seed in the conference tournament, and finishes the regular season with an overall mark of 23-12, with a 13-5 conference record.  Frostburg State falls to 14-18 overall and 11-7 in conference play.

In game one, the Behrend bats came alive in the second inning as the women put seven runs on the board and batted through the order.  The inning started off with a Kristen Macha (Export/Franklin Regional) single, followed by a series of walks and wild pitches by Frostburg pitcher Lindsay Durkin that loaded the bases and brought in two Behrend runs.  Allison Babish (Coraopolis/Montour) then cleared the bases with a triple to the wall, putting the blue and white up 5-0.  After a Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) single that scored another run, Macha would get her second hit of the inning with an RBI double.  Whitby would drive in two more the next inning with a stand-up double as Behrend ran away with a 10-0 blowout victory.

Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) had a phenomenal outing, ringing up eight of the 17 Frostburg batters she faced en route to another complete game victory, including a dominant showing in the second inning in which she struck out the side.  Koman had a no-hitter going into the last batter she faced, but ended the game giving up two Frostburg hits in her shutout win.

In game two Frostburg would get on the board first going up 1-0 with a run in the top of the second.  The blue and white would come right back in the bottom of the second to knot it at 1-1 as Rachelle Lawrence (Warren Center/Northeast Bradford) tripled and then scored on single by Lindsey Baughman (Warren/Warren).  Behrend would go up 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Babish and Kaschauer reached base and were driven home with a double to the right center gap by Macha.  That lead would hold up as Laura Frischkorn (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls) came on in relief of Sandra Jaussi (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) and got the save by striking out Frostburg State’s final batter.

Behrend now awaits tomorrow’s AMCC regular season contests to see which opposing team will capture the #6 seed.  On Wednesday, May 2, Behrend softball will host a first-round #3 (Behrend) vs. #6 (TBA) AMCC Tournament matchup.
