Behrend Softball Splits a Pair Against the Mavericks, Now 8-4 in AMCC

The Penn State Behrend Lions hosted the Medaille Mavericks on Monday, April 21 at the Behrend softball field.  Behrend and Medaille would split the doubleheader with Behrend winning game one 7-1 and Medaille taking the second game of the day 7-2.

In game one Behrend got the offense going in the second inning.  Rachelle Lawrence (Warren Center/Northeast Bradford) and Lindsay Baughman (Warren/Warren) got aboard before Michelle Zill (Fairview/Fairview) tripled bringing in two runs.  Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) followed with a single to put Behrend up 3-0.

Medaille got a run back in the fourth inning cutting the lead to 3-1.  The blue and white got some insurance in the sixth when Lawrence singled to start things off.  After advancing to third Lawrence scored on an error to put the blue and white ahead 4-1.  Behrend eventually loaded the bases before Whitby singled in two more runs to put Behrend ahead 6-1.  The blue and white added another run to take a 7-1 lead into the seventh inning and that would end up as the final score.  Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) got the win going all seven innings while striking out ten batters.  She gave up two hits while walking only two.

Medaille got it going early in game two, scoring a run on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.  Behrend immediately responded as Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) singled in Whitby to tie the game at 1-1.  Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) then smacked a triple to the gap, driving in Kaschauer and giving the blue and white a 2-1 lead.  In the top of the second Medaille loaded the bases with walks before scoring two runs on a wild pitch to go ahead 3-2.  The Mavericks took a lead to the bottom of the second after adding a run to go ahead 4-2 on a wild pitch.

In the fifth Medaille added to its lead again scoring off wild pitches and eventually taking a 7-2 advantage into the bottom of the inning.  Behrend (22-10, 8-4) was unable to rally as the Mavericks earned the split with the win in game two.

Behrend plays again at home on Wednesday, April 23.  The blue and white take on Hilbert in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader to be broadcast on Image Sports.
