Men's Tennis Falls Short at AMCC Championships, Takes Third

Behrend men's tennis finished in third place at the AMCC Championships on Sunday, April 15 despite a strong singles effort in which they took three of the six flights.  The men came into the tournament tied for first place in the AMCC with a 5-1 regular season record, but came up short in doubles action at the tournament and managed just seven total points.  Frostburg State won the tournament with 11 points, with Penn State Altoona taking second with nine points.

Behrend's top two players, Scott Shaw (Tulsa, OK/Jenks) and Miles Boyea (St. Vincent, WI/Upper Canada) both had a strong day and took the first and second flight respectively.  Shaw dominated the top flight winning 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals and 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.  Trevor Dougherty (Meadville/Meadville) won the sixth flight singles competition over Penn State Altoona's Jared Rute.

In doubles action, all three of Behrend's pairs were eliminated in the first round.  Shaw and Boyea were edged out 9-8 by a team from Altoona, Jim Palmer (Sharon/Sharon) and Garrett Grenek (Butler/Butler) were defeated 8-5, and Brad Nagel (West Alexander/McGuffey) and Kelly Manning (Sharpsville/Kennedy Catholic) went down 8-6.
