Karla Murray Named Herb Lauffer Leadership/Scholarship Winner

The recipient of the 2005-06 Herb Lauffer Leadership/Scholarship Award is women's volleyball player Karla Murray (North East/North East).  She was honored on Sunday, April 30 at Behrend's Annual Athletics Picnic.

Murray, a junior, was an outside hitter and team captain for the 2005 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Champion women's volleyball squad.  This Behrend athletic department honor is awarded to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of former Behrend coach and athletic director Herb Lauffer: to be a leader, an excellent student, and a sincere, genuine person who strives to make everyone around them better.

Murray was a starter and big contributor for the Behrend Lions women's volleyball team that posted a 26-8 overall record and 9-0 mark in the AMCC.  The blue and white won their second AMCC Championship and advanced to their first-ever NCAA Tournament in the fall.  Murray has been a starter the past two seasons and currently ranks ninth all-time at Behrend in digs with 960.  She also serves as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Penn State Behrend.

Head coach Phil Pisano said, "Karla is very deserving of this recognition.  She has been a tremendous influence on our team and is an extremely driven person both on and off the court.  We're very proud of all she has accomplished and feel fortunate that she is a part of our program."
