Purpose

The Academic Computing Committee recommends policies, procedures, and other matters relating to academic computing, including planning for the future needs of the College.  The Manager of Network and Information Systems and the Associate Dean serve as ex officio members.

Charges for Current Year

  • Computer testing.  Many faculty members are either interested in administering computerized assessments, or are using it in their classes now.  The committee should examine the issue and make recommendations for increasing classroom security during computerized testing.  How might a Behrend testing center look?

  • Information technology services needs assessment.  The committee should gather information from faculty in the four schools as to their current usage of computers and information technology and develop a list of needed improvements and a wish list of new technology.  Collaborations with the school level IT committees may be helpful.

  • Technology support.  Is there an adequate level of support for faculty who need technology for teaching and/or research that is outside of normal support for an office machine? For example programming applications and/or using specialized hardware and software.  Is this similar or different across schools? Can more programming and database support be provided for teaching and research? (Work with school IT committees.)

  • Penn State Behrend Web site.  Is the Behrend website, as it is being revised, meeting the needs of faculty and academic programs in usability, accessibility, and flexibility for teaching and research needs (meet with Marketing Communication).  Monitor the Penn State response to the ADA lawsuit for the visually impaired and its impact on Behrend.
