Purpose

The Athletics Committee advises and monitors athletic standards related to the educational function of the college and the University.  It approves athletic schedules, considers eligibility of students for intercollegiate athletics, and helps promote a sound academic climate for the intercollegiate athletic program.  The Athletic Director and Faculty Athletic Representative (appointed by the Chancellor) serve as ex officio members of this Committee.  Members of the intercollegiate coaching staff, other than the Athletic Director, are ineligible to serve on this Committee.

Charges for Current Year

  • University Faculty Senate Intercollegiate Athletic Committee. The Intercollegiate Athletic Committee of the University Faculty Senate is undergoing changes to the committee membership and D3 Faculty Athletics representatives may be asked to function differently. The Committee should be involved in these debates and discussions and monitor the impact of changes on Behrend and other D3 campuses.

  • The Committee should review the current procedures for athletes working with faculty when classes are missed. Are there ways that these processes can be improved?

  • The Committee should examine the impact of participation in sports on the academic progress of student athletes. Are athletes equally able to make progress toward their degrees? Are athletes able to benefit from other activities that enhance their professional development?
