Faculty and staff mentors can help make the college experience a bit more "manageable" for new students by providing advice, referring them to available services within the college and community, and just being a friend. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact the assigned student before he or she arrives on campus, simply to say hello, give a welcome, answer any questions, and provide a base for further contact as the semester begins.
If appropriate, the faculty/staff person may want to include the student in activities such as social events, lectures, athletic events, and community meetings. Assistance with funding for students to attend these events is available through the program.
